The book "Manual of Freshwater Biota" deals with the general organisation and taxonomy of common Flora and Fauna of Indian Freshwaters belonging to Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Chrysophyta, Pyrrophyta, Macrohydrophytes, Testaceous Rhizopoda, ciliates, Rotifera, Cladocera, Aquatic insects - Spring tails, Mayflies, Dragon flies, Damsel flies, Stone flies, Grasshoppers, Locusts, Crickets, True bugs, Lace wings, Alder flies, Beetles, Butterflies and Moths, True flies, Bees, Wasps and Ants; Mollusca, Fishes and Birds.
This book is the outcome of researches done by the authors and their school in the field as well as in the laboratory for more than three decades. This is the up-to-date and comprehensive compilations on freshwater biota that facilitates in-depth understanding of the taxonomy, biology, ecology, phenology, distribution and behaviour of the aquatic plants and animals. Identification of periphyton, benthos, phytoplankton, macrohydrophytes zooplankton, macro-invertebrates, fishes and birds are precisely done which will be useful for Post-graduate, M.Phil, Ph.D. and professional courses in biology, hydrology, limnology, fishery technology, pollution abatement strategies, bio-indicator method in assessing environmental quality, public health and hygiene, irrigation and recreational activities, All identified specimens have been depicted by diagrams and photographs.
The book provides keys and illustrations to aid in the identification of freshwater plants and animals in field conditions. We hope and trust the present book will become an indispensable source of useful information on freshwater biota for all persons interested in the study of the structure and function of the inland water bodies.

Dr. Jayashree Datta Munshi, was Professor of Botany in the University Department of Botany, T.M. Bhagalpur University. She has done extensive research work on different aspects of ecology of plants, diarah lands, forests and limnology of ponds, reservopirs, lakes, thermal springs, wet lands and rivers. She was principal investigator in several U.G.C., INSA, CSIR & DOE sponsored research projects and has published many research articles in Indian and foreign journals. She was incharge of Environmental Research Laboratory of T.M. Bhagalpur University, BHAGALPUR.

Dr. S.P. Roy is Professor of Zoology (Entomology/Aquatic Biology) in the University Department of Zoology, T.M. Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur. He did his Post-graduation with Entomology from this University placing First Class and obtained his Ph.D. degree on ‘‘Ecology of Aquatic Insects’’ from the same University. He has more than 30 years of teaching and research experience on Taxonomy, Population dynamics, food and feeding biology, eco-physiology and energetics of aquatic insects of both lentic and lotic systems. He has also done significant work on the ecology of Wetland birds. Several Ph.D. students had obtained their degree under his supervision on various aspects of aquatic insects and their role as indicator of water quality.

Dr. J.S. Datta Munshi, M.Sc. (Pat.), Ph.D. (B.H.U.), F.N.A., F.N.A. Sc. was Professor and Head of the University Department of Zoology, T.M. Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur. He has forty years of teaching experience working in different capacities in Patna University, Banaras Hindu University and Bhagalpur University. He also officiated as Dean, Faculty of Science at Bhagalpur University. He was CSIR Emeritus Scientist and INSA Senior Scientist. Recipient of S.L. Hora Gold Medal and Chandrakala Hora INSA Award. He has traveled widely in connection with International conferences and research work, and published more than 260 research papers in National and International journals of repute, besides some important and useful books. He has guided scores of Ph.D. research students in the field of Freshwater Biology and eco-physiology of Air-breathing fishes.
